I have new respect for our stock horn.

Went hunting for a 380Hz (low) 12v horn, bought a (red) "300Db Truck, Boat, Train" horn and intended to do a review.
As you probably guessed, was a waste of $20US, but alas..... here's how this 2A 300Db horn fared:
122Db @ 4 inches, 510Hz (high), draws 4.5A @ 12v. They're all over eBay.

By comparison, stock horn has lower freq. and produces 128.5Db @ 4 inches.

Next test: Brass horn with 3.5" dia. squeeze bulb.

That's for posting this. Maybe that 300dB is at zero distance? Power decays as the square of the distance. But seriously, I like strident horns. I've fitted Fiamm dual snail horns to most of my bikes. They make a great commanding tone and are strong at motorway speeds, having bought me valuable room in motorway traffic on a number of occasions.

The stock Thunderbird horn is also very good but monotone - not really penetrating - so I was thinking of adding a second, high tone on the right side of the headstock. There is a plastic plug in the frame there, blanking a hole that could be used to mount a second bracket. I'll now ignore these all-over-eBay devices in favour of a reputable mark (Hella or Fiamm). If do this, as with my other bikes, it will be with a relay, not just using the stock wiring, to protect the handlebar switch and make sure the horns get their full dose of volts.

Best wishes to you

4.5A throws a pretty good spark, adding a relay is definitely a good idea.
I neglected to mention, those red horns are advertised as 2A.
Less than half the volume at over twice the draw.

Thanks, LeT
